New way of monitoring rails apps

With the number of Ruby on Rails project growing, the framwork getting more and more features and stability we see coming some new applications to monitor your applications really easily.

Scout and Exceptionnal are two of them.

Scout allows you to install plugins in your applications and have a really nice and well organized interface to monitor several aspects of your application depending on which plugins you installed. There are currently 28 plugins available and as I’m just testing scout and have a free account, I am allowed to have 1 client and 3 plugins installed. I choose Phusion Passenger monitor and MySQL slow queries and I am really impressed by the ease of installation of everything. one word, Amazing!

Exceptional is an error tracking and managing system for Rails folks and their apps. We’re in the middle of developing our next beta release and need your help.
I just installed it this evening as I received the invitation, I’m waiting for the first result to give my impressions. Exceptional blog

Dos vulnerability in REXML

There is a DoS vulnerability in the REXML library used by Rails to parse incoming XML requests. A so-called “XML entity explosion” attack technique can be used for remotely bringing down (disabling) any application which parses user-provided XML. Most Rails applications will be vulnerable to this attack.

Manual ruby update

Due to the problems announced about some vulnerabilities.

Ruby 1.8.7-p72 and 1.8.6-p287 are published but are not still available through ubuntu package system. Manual installation is required and simple, download your version, unzip it, and

./configure
make
sudo make install

You will probably also have to install rubygems the same way, download it from Rubyforge

Passenger 2.0.1

Phusion has released Passenger 2.0.1, the first non-release candidate version of their popular Passenger / mod_rails / mod_rack Rails deployment Apache module. Passenger was developed to make the deployment of Rails applications on Apache “a breeze” and now with the 2.x series, it makes it easy to deploy Rack based applications too (such as Merb apps).

Curiously, Passenger now also boasts Python WSGI support, meaning you can deploy both Rails and Django apps in the same way. Passenger also say the 2.x version is more stable, using less memory, and features significantly improved load balancing between processes. Upload buffering is also implemented, making Passenger even more efficient in file upload situations.
