Passenger 2.0.1

Phusion has released Passenger 2.0.1, the first non-release candidate version of their popular Passenger / mod_rails / mod_rack Rails deployment Apache module. Passenger was developed to make the deployment of Rails applications on Apache “a breeze” and now with the 2.x series, it makes it easy to deploy Rack based applications too (such as Merb apps).

Curiously, Passenger now also boasts Python WSGI support, meaning you can deploy both Rails and Django apps in the same way. Passenger also say the 2.x version is more stable, using less memory, and features significantly improved load balancing between processes. Upload buffering is also implemented, making Passenger even more efficient in file upload situations.

Passenger - mod_rails

I was using Thin for my rails website, and I gave a try to Passenger

According to some tests:

The difference between Thin and Passenger is not the speed but more the ease of install and configuration. But the CPU & memory load is also lower.

The new 2.0 RC version is out and I will give it a try this week-end.

Firefox 3 download day and Guinness world record

Help to show that Open source is a great thing!

The Firefox team would like to invite the world to join in their quest to set a Guinness World Record for the most software downloaded in 24 hours. How do they planning to do this? They want as many people as possible to pledge to download Firefox 3 within 24 hours of its release as part of Download Day 2008.

All we have to do is get Firefox 3 during Download Day to help set the record for most software downloads in 24 hours – it’s that easy.

The official date for the launch of Firefox 3 will be posted on Spread Firefox website soon. Join the community and this effort by pledging today.

Ossec HIDS

OSSEC is an open source Host-based Intrusion Detection System (HIDS). It is really eay to install with ubuntu and is able to detect many intrusion attemps. It has a powerful correlation and analysis engine, integrating log analysis, file integrity checking, Windows registry monitoring, centralized policy enforcement, rootkit detection, real-time alerting and active response.

There’s a large library of existing rules but new can be created via simple xml files.

The OSSEC provides a Web User Interface (wui) to check in real time what’s happening and to have statistics about incoming activity to your server.

OSSEC is available for Linux, Solaris, *BSD, Mac and variants, Windows 2000,XP and 2003

Ubuntu server edition

Ubuntu server edition is out with the 8.04 release. Switching from Debian for my server gave me the opportunity to have something stable but with some new nice features the could be good for anyone.

Packages provided are newer than in Debian, this is an advantage. The slow release cycle for Debian is what is contributing to its stability but now things are going to fast and the idea of syncronicity in free software projects from M. Shuttleworth is a good idea.

Ubuntu brings services that can be deployed really quickly for mail, web, DNS, file serving or database management. LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) are also available at set up.

I didn’t use the ‘server’ community documentation but if it’s a friendly and reactive as the “Desktop” one, then ubuntu is really the best choice.

to set up my server with lamp, RoR, ftp, postfix and dovecot it took only 2 hours, and no real problem. Everything went just fine.

Mandarina on github

For testing git I put mandarina2 on github.com

As I’m the only developper of this I don’t expect that much but it’s just a way to have more visibility and learn how to work with Git.

Also many resources available to discover Git:

gallery2 apple theme

I was trying to find a new theme for my gallery2 installation, after some google requests, I found the pear theme

to install you can do it by svn:

cd your-gallery/themes
svn co --username pear --password pear http://trac.cz/svn/pear/

and activate the theme in gallery’s plugin panel.

It looks nice with some cool features. if you look for something new you should try.
